Teacher of School Swimming

This CPD course will equip you to plan, deliver and evaluate school swimming lessons in line with the national curriculum.

Is this course right for me?  

This is for anyone working in a school swimming environment who has previous experience in being responsible for a class or group of pupils, these include but are not limited to;

• School teachers
• Teaching assistants
• Learning support staff
• PGCE students

You need to have turned 18 by the start date of this course.

What can I expect? 

This course will be delivered through a mixture of classroom workshops, practical poolside learning and assessment activities. You will have the opportunity to deliver school swimming lessons to gain practical experience.

What will I learn? 

During the course, your tutor will be covering the following topics:

• The role of swimming and water safety as part of the PE curriculum
• Health and safety practices
• How to recognise a casualty in the water and what is required of you during an emergency
• Your roles and responsibilities within an aquatic environment to safeguard the welfare of the children
• How to support a lead swimming teacher during a school swimming lesson
• Different methods of lesson organisation in a swimming pool environment
• The importance of school swimming and water safety preparation
• How to increase active learning time
• The meaning of the term physical literacy and how early physical literacy can impact an individual for life
• How to develop water confidence using core aquatic skills
• How to introduce the swimming strokes
• Developing skills appropriate to those working at key stage 2 and beyond for swimming and water safety
• The technical aspects related to the four strokes
• The survival swimming strokes
• Faults and there causes in each of the four strokes and how to introduce progressive practices to bring about improvement
• The key considerations when developing a lesson plan
• Creating lesson plans for the delivery of swimming lessons
• The key aspects of communication in relation to delivery
• Reviewing the effectiveness of your planning and delivery
